YouTube Star Jake Paul Slams Critics of His Decision to Fight 58-Year-Old Mike Tyson
YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul has come under fire for his decision to take on 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, but he’s standing firm in his choice.
The 27-year-old sparked controversy earlier this year when he revealed that his next opponent would be the legendary Tyson. The criticism only intensified after the fight was postponed due to a medical emergency Tyson experienced mid-flight, pushing the bout to November 15.
Among the loudest voices of disapproval is Paul’s long-time rival, KSI, who didn’t hold back during an appearance on talkSPORT Breakfast.
“I think it’s stupid,” KSI remarked. “He’s trying to fight an OAP [Old Age Pensioner]. Mike Tyson hasn’t fought in years, and he can barely walk. It makes no sense, but that’s Jake Paul for you. It’s all about taking advantage of people who don’t have an advantage. Honestly, it’s boring, and I wish Netflix didn’t get involved, but here we are.”
When asked about the backlash in an interview with talkSPORT MMA’s Gareth A. Davies at a PFL press conference in Washington, Paul responded bluntly.
“I think it’s disrespectful to Mike, first and foremost,” Paul said. “And I’d challenge them to step into the ring with him. If Mike wants to fight, then Mike wants to fight. If he wants to make it a pro fight, then let’s do it.”
Tyson, who hasn’t fought professionally since his 2005 loss to Kevin McBride, has been training intensely, and Paul believes the former champ is still a formidable opponent.
“Look at his training videos, watch him on the mitts. He’s got a 30-pound weight advantage and is incredibly strong,” Paul added. “People can say what they want, but they’re still going to watch. The old guard wants to see me lose, but that’s what makes this fight intriguing—two generations clashing. Fans over 30 want Tyson to win; those under 25 want me to win. That’s what makes it so interesting.”
