Ukraine Restricts Telegram Use Among Officials Over Security Threats
National Security Council Cites Risks from Russian Intelligence
Ukraine has banned the use of Telegram for government, military, and security officials due to concerns over national security. The decision was announced by the National Security and Defence Council (NSDC), which stated that the app poses threats because it may be compromised by Russian intelligence services.
In a recent meeting, Budanov from the NSDC presented evidence suggesting that Russian intelligence could access Telegram users’ personal data, including deleted messages. As a result, Telegram has been prohibited on official devices used by government employees, military personnel, and critical infrastructure staff.
Exceptions for Official Duties
The cybersecurity center clarified that only those officials whose duties require the use of Telegram would be exempt from the ban. The move highlights Ukraine’s efforts to safeguard sensitive information amid ongoing security concerns.
