The Nigerian government plans to send its first civilian into space, marking a significant milestone in the country’s space exploration efforts.
Mathew Adepoju, Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), announced this during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, June 19.
Adepoju disclosed that Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) to facilitate this ambitious mission.
He emphasized that this collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s 25th anniversary of space exploration, positioning the nation among active participants in human spaceflight.
“This initiative will drive scientific research and technological advancement,” remarked Dr. Adepoju.
He underscored the potential of this endeavor to promote technological growth and stimulate interest in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among Nigerian youth.
The Director General reiterated NASRDA’s commitment to harnessing space technology for national development and enhancing global competitiveness.
He assured that the project would uphold rigorous safety standards and be carried out with professionalism, drawing on international expertise and best practices.
