Texas Flood Horror: 51 Confirmed Dead, 15 Children Among Victims Search for Missing Campers Intensifies
The death toll from the devastating flash floods in central Texas has risen to 51, with 15 children confirmed among the victims. Rescue teams are racing against time as more than two dozen people, including young campers, remain missing.
The Guadalupe River surged by over 26 feet in under an hour, overwhelming towns across Kerr County, Travis County, Burnet County, and beyond. Communities were caught off guard as floodwaters tore through streets, camps, and homes leaving behind a trail of destruction and heartbreak.
Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed that 43 lives were lost in his county alone, with 12 adults and 5 children still unidentified. One of the hardest-hit locations was Camp Mystic, where at least 27 children are missing. The summer camp had over 750 kids on site when the floods struck.
In Travis County, four fatalities have been confirmed, while Burnet County reported two deaths and at least six people still unaccounted for. Authorities also revealed that more than 50 water rescues were conducted in Burnet alone.
Tanya Burwick, a 62-year-old woman, tragically drowned in Tom Green County after her vehicle was overtaken by floodwaters, San Angelo police confirmed.
In total, over 850 people have been rescued 160 of them by air. Some were found clinging to trees for survival, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has issued an emergency federal disaster declaration to expand aid to the hardest-hit counties.
City manager Dalton Rice said, “We’ve been pulling people out of flooded areas non-stop. Many are sheltering in place while we deliver food and water. But time is critical.”
The search continues, with helicopters, boats, and ground crews scouring for missing victims as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
