A UK shopper got an unexpected surprise when they found a live toad inside a bag of salad, turning a routine grocery trip into a bizarre encounter.
Discovery of the Unwanted Guest
The incident took place at a Waitrose distribution center in Bracknell, England, where a live toad was discovered inside a pre-packaged salad. The customer who purchased the salad noticed the amphibian and returned the item, leading to the unusual find.
Expert Consultation and Toad Rescue
Graham Martin of Berkshire Reptile Rescue was called in to handle the situation. He assured that the toad, now in his care, was being well looked after. “He’s in a nice little box with soil, leaves, and a water bowl. I’ve thrown in some beetles for dinner, and he’s loving life,” Martin said.
Safety and Hygiene Concerns
John Lewis Partnership, the company that owns Waitrose, apologized to the customer and stated that such incidents should not occur due to their strict washing and sorting processes. However, they admitted the toad somehow made it through their system.
Not an Isolated Incident
Although John Lewis Partnership called it a “very rare occurrence,” Martin mentioned that he’s received similar calls about critters showing up in unexpected places “three or four” times this year.
A Memorable Grocery Experience
While the customer may not have been thrilled with the unwanted ingredient in their salad, the toad is now safe and being cared for. Nevertheless, finding a live amphibian in your food would have most people hopping with surprise!
