São Paulo Mayoral Debate Erupts in Violence
A mayoral debate in São Paulo took a shocking turn when candidate Jose Luiz Datena attacked his opponent with a metal chair.
Violent Incident at Debate
During the televised debate, Datena, a news anchor and mayoral candidate, violently assaulted Pablo Marçal, causing severe injuries. Marçal, who sustained a fractured rib and a dislocated finger, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties.
The incident has caused significant disruption in the race for São Paulo’s mayoral seat, which is currently being contested by Datena, Marçal, incumbent Mayor Ricardo Nunes, and leftist candidate Guilherme Boulos.
Marçal, who was polling in third place, had previously announced his intention to “destabilize” Datena, who was trailing with only 6% of the vote. During the debate, Marçal brought up past sexual harassment allegations against Datena, which, although later retracted, appeared to provoke a strong reaction from Datena.
Datena accused Marçal of turning the debate into a spectacle, while Marçal later likened the attack to assassination attempts on Donald Trump, questioning the extent of political hostility.
Marçal’s campaign, driven by his significant social media presence with over 13 million followers, has gained traction ahead of the election set for early October.
