Quentin Tarantino Weighs In on “Rust” Tragedy, Holds Alec Baldwin Partly Responsible for On-Set Shooting
In a recent episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts on the tragic shooting that occurred on the set of the film “Rust,” resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Tarantino pointed out that while the primary responsibility lies with the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, actor Alec Baldwin also holds some accountability. He emphasized that actors should personally verify the safety of the weapons they use during filming, a view that challenges the current industry standards set by SAG-AFTRA. The union has previously maintained that it is not an actor’s duty to check weapons, a stance that Tarantino directly opposes.
This discussion comes on the heels of a July court decision that dismissed a manslaughter charge against Baldwin. The judge ruled that crucial evidence had been mishandled by prosecutors, with the evidence allegedly being placed in an improper file, which effectively concealed it from Baldwin’s legal team.
In response to these legal blunders, Baldwin has filed lawsuits against Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza.
The ongoing debate over safety responsibilities on film sets continues to stir significant controversy, prompting calls for stricter protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
