Naval Officers Accused of Killing Police Inspector in Lagos
It is alleged that a Police Inspector was killed by suspected naval officers in the Okokomaiko area of Ojo Local Government Area in Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred while the Inspector and four of his colleagues were on a routine patrol in the Igbo-Elerin area of Ojo.
Trouble reportedly started when the policemen stopped a commercial motorcycle rider and his passenger for a traffic violation. The rider, dressed in civilian clothes, was carrying a passenger when the police intervened.
The rider and his passenger, who claimed to be naval officers, allegedly resisted arrest. An eyewitness, Shola Shodiya, reported that the motorcycle rider and his passenger engaged the policemen in a heated argument.
A source told Daily Trust;
“It later escalated into a physical altercation between the policemen and the rider, who turned out to be naval personnel.”
Commenting on the incident, Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said that a report was received at Okokomaiko Police Station around 4:30 PM on Saturday, June 22, from members of the public. The report stated that policemen on routine patrol in Igbo-Elerin had attempted to impound a motorcycle for riding against traffic at Beno filling station.
The two men in civilian clothes, who claimed to be naval officers, resisted arrest and confronted the policemen.
Hundeyin stated;
“Other naval personnel in uniform arrived at the scene and supported their colleagues in the altercation. One Inspector collapsed and lost consciousness during the incident. The naval officers fled the scene. The inspector was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body has been taken to Idi-Araba Mortuary in Yaba for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.”
