Man in the US Who Attacked Judge in Court Pleads Guilty but Mentally Ill
Deobra Redden, who was caught on video attacking a judge during a court hearing, has pleaded guilty but mentally ill.
In a statement released on September 6 by Redden’s lawyers from CEGA Law Group, they highlighted that their client acknowledges his actions and is seeking mental health treatment as part of his sentencing. The legal team hopes this case will draw attention to the need for mental health reforms.
They expressed sympathy for Judge Mary Kay Holthus, who was attacked, and thanked the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for helping resolve the case.
The incident, captured on video, shows Redden jumping over the judge’s bench while Judge Holthus was sentencing him for an earlier conviction. Holthus had made a comment about Redden “getting a taste of something else,” prompting him to charge at her. Despite the disturbance, the judge only suffered minor injuries.
Redden was quickly restrained and later appeared in court with a facemask and handcuffs, where he was sentenced to 19-48 months for the attempted battery. His sentencing for the attack on the judge is scheduled for November 7. His lawyers are pushing for mental health treatment to be a key part of his punishment.
