Indian Woman Missing After Falling Into Sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
A woman is missing after falling into an eight-meter (26-foot) deep sinkhole in the Kuala Lumpur city center on Friday, August 23, 2024. The pavement caved in suddenly, burying her, according to Malaysian authorities.
The incident occurred in the Dang Wangi area of the Malaysian capital.
Local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman stated that, based on witness accounts, the woman was walking along the pavement when the ground beneath her suddenly collapsed.
Kuala Lumpur’s fire and rescue department, which received a distress call early on Friday, reported that the woman is believed to be an Indian national. However, Sulizmie mentioned that her identity could not yet be confirmed as investigations are ongoing.
Rescuers have barricaded the area and are using an excavator to clear debris from the sinkhole, but there has been no sign of the woman so far.
“The search will continue until the victim is found,” Sulizmie said. He declined to comment on the cause of the incident.
