Ex-Ukrainian Politician Gunned Down Outside Elite School in Spain While Dropping Off His Child
A former Ukrainian politician, Andriy Portnov, was sh0t de@d in broad daylight while dropping off his daughter at an American school in Madrid, Spain.
The attacker, riding a motorbike, fired five times at Portnov in the upscale Pozuelo district around 9:15 a.m., according to Madrid police. His body remained at the scene for nearly two hours while awaiting legal clearance for removal.
Police have not officially named the victim, but Spanish media widely reported it was Andriy Portnov, a former top aide to Ukraine’s ex-president Viktor Yanukovich, who was ousted in 2014.
The killing is being treated as a possible “settling of scores” or revenge hit, sources said.
Portnov had previously fled to Russia, returned to Ukraine in 2021, and reportedly left again in 2022 despite a travel ban for military-age men. It’s unclear how long he had been living in Spain.
He had won a defamation case last year against Ukrainian media that labeled him pro-Russian and was sanctioned in 2021 by the U.S. for corruption and manipulating Ukraine’s legal system.
Spain’s anti-terrorism police unit, Brigada de Información, is now handling the investigation into what looks like a highly targeted assassination.
