Elon Musk Considers Banning Apple Devices from His Companies
Wealthy entrepreneur Elon Musk has issued a threat to prohibit Apple devices at his companies if the iPhone manufacturer proceeds with its planned integration of OpenAI.
On Monday, June 10, Apple conducted its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference, announcing a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its voice assistant, Siri.
In iOS 18, Apple stated that users will be able to ask Siri questions, and if the assistant determines that ChatGPT can assist, it will seek permission to share the query and deliver the response directly. This enables users to obtain answers from ChatGPT without needing to open the ChatGPT iOS app. Photos, PDFs, or other documents sent to ChatGPT will receive similar treatment.
Responding to the announcement, Musk termed it a ‘security breach’ and threatened to prohibit Apple devices at his companies’ locations.
“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, stated in a post.
“And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the entrance, where they will be kept in a Faraday cage,” added Musk, who is also the CEO of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla and rocket company SpaceX.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous that Apple isn’t capable of creating their own AI, yet they claim to ensure OpenAI will protect your security and privacy! Apple has no idea what happens to your data once it is handed over to OpenAI. They are betraying your trust,” Musk further commented.
