Illegal Mining Operations in Ibieno Local Government Area
Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested five Chinese nationals on suspicion of illegal mining activities in Ndito-Eka-Iba village, located in Ibieno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
According to a statement released by the commission on Sunday, September 15, 2024, the arrests were made by the “Special Task Force on Illegal Mining” at the EFCC’s Zonal Office in Uyo. This action followed credible intelligence regarding illegal operations by foreign mining companies in both Eket and Ibieno Local Government Areas.
Arrest of Suspected Illegal Miners
The Chinese suspects, identified as Zhon Qinping, Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Mou Zhou, and Chen Zeng, were apprehended at different times. Zhon Qinping was arrested on September 10, 2024, while the remaining suspects were detained on August 29, 2024, all within Ibieno Local Government Area.
These individuals were allegedly involved in illegal mining activities, specifically extracting a mineral believed to be ilmenite, a titanium-iron oxide mineral.
The EFCC has confirmed that the suspects will face charges once investigations are completed.
