Dutch football icon Ruud Gullit responds to controversy over fans’ ‘blackface’ imitation during Euro 2024
Ruud Gullit, a football legend, has reacted after Dutch supporters dressed up as him during the Netherlands’ 2-1 victory against Poland at Euro 2024.
The fans faced strong criticism for their use of ‘blackface’ in their attempt to mimic Gullit’s appearance in the stands during their country’s opening match.
They painted their faces black, wore dreadlocks resembling his iconic hairstyle, and donned moustaches to imitate him, a practice widely condemned as racist.
However, Gullit expressed no offense, reportedly stating, ‘I actually feel honored,’ as per Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
Gullit, who is revered in the Netherlands and won the 1988 European Championship with the national team, was commemorated by the three fans who wore replica jerseys from that era.
In response to the backlash, one of the fans, Bart van de Ven, announced that he would retire his ‘Rasta Ruud’ persona, according to DutchNews.
“I may have made a mistake or overlooked something. I absolutely don’t want to cause harm, so I’ve decided to stop,” he stated.
Van de Ven acknowledged differing opinions on his actions, saying, “I’ve received many positive responses, but it’s clear that some people feel differently. I need to respect that and listen. I don’t want my performance to create negative associations for anyone.”
