Brazil: Baby Girl Fatally Mauled After Parents Allegedly Leave Her Alone with Unfed Dog
Brazilian authorities report that a couple has been arrested after their 5-month-old daughter, Isis da Silva Sobrinho, was fatally mauled by a family dog while the parents went shopping for a barbecue.
Isis was asleep on a couch in their home in Cidade Oriental, Goiás, when the attack occurred on June 4, according to local news sources Portal 6, Globo g1, and Metropoles.
The parents, whose names have not been disclosed, are charged with manslaughter without intent to kill. Reports from Globo g1 and Ovale state they were released after posting bail of approximately $263 (Brazilian R$1,412).
The couple had left to shop while Isis’ uncle prepared for a barbecue in the backyard. He informed authorities that he was unaware the child was left alone. The uncle assumed the mother was still home when he saw the father leave, per Portal 6 and Globo g1.
Initially dismissing Isis’ cries, thinking she was with her mother, the uncle later discovered her injuries and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The child sustained multiple bite marks and a torn pelvis, according to Portal 6.
The dog involved belonged to Isis’ grandparents and had been with the family for five years. Authorities revealed that the dog had not been fed on the day of the incident, suggesting hunger might have prompted the attack, as reported by Metropoles.
The local Civil Police are investigating the incident, per Portal 6, Metropoles, and Ovale.
