A Man Sentenced to 4 Years for Běat¡ng His Pregnant Wife with Cable and Stone in Abuja
A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sentenced Thiouma Kwawi, a 39-year-old security guard, to four years in prison for assaulting his wife with a cable wire, causing her significant injuries.
Kwawi, found guilty of criminal force, assault, and causing grievous hurt, had pleaded for leniency.
Senior Magistrate Munir Sani sentenced Kwawi to two years imprisonment for the first charge, with an alternative of paying a fine of N200,000. For the second charge, Sani imposed an additional two years imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The court also ordered Kwawi to pay N200,000 in compensation to his wife for her medical expenses. Additionally, Kwawi was directed to be incarcerated at Suleja Correctional Centre, where he will face hard labor.
The prosecuting counsel, Dabo Yakubu, informed the court that Kauna Jedi, Kwawi’s 19-year-old wife, residing at Mopol Barrack, Kuje Junction, Abuja, reported the assault to the Iddo police station on June 1. Yakubu stated that Kwawi used a stone and a cable wire to beat his pregnant wife, resulting in severe injuries.
The offence contravened Sections 267 and 247 of the Penal Code. Section 247 stipulates that anyone, except as provided for in Section 245, who voluntarily causes grievous hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment for up to seven years and may also be liable to a fine.
