In a new interview with The Times, Legend opened up about watching the man who once signed him to G.O.O.D. Music spiral into controversy. The Grammy-winning artist called Kanye’s transformation “shocking, heartbreaking, and sad to witness.”
According to Legend, the Kanye he knew back in 2004 was passionate, creative, and inspiring — a far cry from the person who now headlines for antisemitic rants, anti-Black comments, and disturbing praise for Adolf Hitler.
“Watching his descent feels like watching someone lose themselves completely,” Legend shared. “There’s a clear shift since he lost his mother [Donda West] in 2007 … and it’s only gotten worse.”
Kanye’s string of recent controversies — including saying he wished he had kids with Paris Hilton instead of Kim Kardashian, and releasing a song titled “Heil Hitler” — have shocked even his past supporters. While the world debates what changed, John Legend is certain: “This isn’t the Kanye I once knew.”
Their friendship reportedly ended over political differences, but Legend now admits there’s a deeper sadness seeing the man he once called “brother” become a symbol of hate.
