4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Los Angeles
A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California on Monday afternoon, sending tremors throughout the region.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake, initially measured at 4.7, occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m., about 2.5 miles south-southeast of Highland Park, near the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The earthquake had a depth of 7.5 miles, and the USGS received numerous reports from people across the greater Los Angeles area who felt the shaking.
According to KTLA viewers, the tremor was experienced from the west side of Los Angeles to the Inland Empire and beyond. Glen Walker of KTLA noted that in Hollywood, “the whole building was shaking pretty good,” and mentioned that the station’s engineering team was inspecting the premises for any potential issues.
Following the quake, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) activated “earthquake mode.” Fire personnel from all 106 LAFD neighborhood stations were dispatched to inspect their districts for any damage to critical infrastructure or other areas of concern.
As of 1:45 p.m., the LAFD’s assessments were ongoing, with no significant damage reported within their service area.
