36 people have lost their lives and dozens are in hospitals after consuming illegally brewed alcohol in India.
In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, at least 36 deaths and over 60 hospitalizations have been reported due to tainted liquor, according to a government spokesperson on Thursday.
Since Wednesday, more than 100 individuals have been treated in hospitals in Kallakurichi district, located 150 miles from the state capital Chennai, suffering from symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea.
The state government has taken action against 10 officials, including the district’s chief administrator and police chief, in response to the incident.
“I was shocked and saddened to hear the news… Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it,” stated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in a statement.
Police have arrested four individuals involved in selling illegal alcohol and confiscated 200 liters of the alcoholic drink mixed with methanol, as confirmed by the state government.
